This is an English Learning Lesson by Kristianto Saputro. In this session, I will explain you about one of the functional texts, a procedural text.
This lesson aims students to be able to:
· identify the meaning of procedural text,
· identify the rhetorical steps in procedural text, and
· make a procedural text.
This lesson provides you;
· a brief explanation about procedural text,
· a video about procedural text, and
· a task to make a procedural text.
Chapter 1: Brief Explanation
The procedural text is the text that explains how to do or to make something. There are two types of procedural text. The first one is text that instructs how to do a particular activity, such as; recipes, rules for games, science experiments, road safety rules, how-to-do-it manuals, etc. The other one is text that instructs how to operate a thing, such as; manuals for operating computer, machine, etc.
There are six characteristic of procedural text. A procedural text should;
- has a title,
- lists materials,
- has numbered steps or use sequential adverbs (first, second, next, finally, etc),
- includes specific measurements,
- includes details to help the reader, and
- use command verbs.

- the steps, and
- the command verbs.
Watch the video on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cEe5J4XAak.
The second activity is making an own procedural text. Based on your understanding, make your own procedural text. You should consider the six characteristics of procedural text. Do not take or copy the existed procedural text! Use your creativity! ;)
